40 (and three quarters) (ish)

I turned forty last year and I expected to feel some sort of way but apart from feeling confused and frustrated every time I spelled it fourty and spellcheck told me I had it wrong yet again, I didn’t really feel much of anything. I felt gratitude for the family and friends who made my birthday feel so special. I felt weird in the way one does when they hit a milestone birthday after going through a life-changing illness. I felt delighted and exhausted because Shawn’s brother got married four days before my birthday and our whole family was coming down from a long weekend of joy and celebration. I turned forty and I ate brunch and that was it.

And then in May I hit my 10-year anniversary of being diagnosed with cancer.

And then in June I had surgery.

And all of a sudden I am feeling something. I don’t even know what to call it. Unsettled? Uncomfortable? I am feeling discombobulated and cattywampus and very fourty-I-mean-forty.

I'm not saying it’s a bad thing. It’s just a new thing. A slightly itchy-brain thing. It is zero percent surprising that I reacted by cutting my hair off, truly. The most surprising part of it is that I managed to resist getting bangs.

Writing has felt challenging for what feels like a long time. I didn’t want to force it because who wants to have a hobby that feels like a chore, but the longer it’s been since I wrote for fun, the less likely it feels like an option to return to. So here I am. Cattywampus and itchy, trying to convince myself my new hair is more flirty bob and less granny bob, forcing myself through gritted teeth to admit that writing can be fun and forty is the correct spelling.

Meal Plan 05/22/2023 - 05/26/2023

I’m feeling a little overwhelmed with the unrelenting demands of everyday life, and at the same time I’m feeling annoyed with myself because how boring. I am a real treat to be around these days is what I’m saying.

Monday: It’s the Victoria Day long weekend and we’ve had gorgeous weather. Tonight we’ll barbecue burgers and serve them with slices of watermelon.

Tuesday: The kids don’t have school because four-day weekends are a thing you get to look forward to as a working parent with school-aged kids. We’ll have Extra Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Wings and Buffalo Cauliflower with some sort of green Responsibility Vegetable on the side.

Wednesday: Balsamic Marinated Flank Steak served with Curly Endive with Citrus Vinaigrette

Thursday: It’s Poppy’s birthday so we’re going to her favourite restaurant for her favourite pasta.

Friday: Whipped Cottage Cheese served with lots of fresh veggies for dipping, cheese and crackers, pickles, olives, mixed nuts, and fresh berries for a Friday night park dinner.

Meal Plan 04/03/23 - 04/07/23

We had a lot of fun this weekend and with that fun came a lot of takeout and snack meals. I’m committed to the meal plan this week is what I’m saying. Vegetables are our best friends this week. Takeout, we don’t know her (this week).

Monday: The butcher had a new flavour of chicken wings this week so we’re trying Maui Chicken Wings, oven-baked because our air fryer was part of the giant recall and we haven’t received our replacement yet. We’ll eat Mac & Cheese and fresh veggies with roasted red pepper hummus on the side.

Tuesday: Bacon-lettuce-tomato-avocado sandwiches on Grossy Pelosi’s Mom’s Italian Bread.

Wednesday: Spinach and Asparagus Quiche served with arugula salad.

Thursday: Creamy Roasted Carrot Soup served with grilled cheese sandwiches and fresh veggies with dip.

Friday: Coconut Cod served with wild rice and some form of green Responsibility Vegetable on the side.

I’m hoping to have a big baking week because my family is getting together for the first time since … last summer maybe? I missed Thanksgiving because we had hand-foot-mouth in our house and one of my siblings missed Christmas because their family was sick. Last summer may have been the last time we were all together. Anyway, my parents are hosting an egg hunt in their backyard for all of the little kids and I’m hoping to sit around the fire pit with my siblings and eat baked goods. So far on my wishlist I’ve got: Nanaimo Bar Cake, Grandma’s Pumpkin Chiffon Pie, Mini Lemon Meringue Tarts, and Grossy’s Chocolate Chip Cookies made with mini eggs. It’s an ambitious list but I’m motivated by the idea of taking to-go containers for my siblings to fill up with sweet treats to take home and enjoy in quiet moments between Easter chaos.

Meal Plan 03/27/23 - 03/31/23

We kind of lost the plot over spring break and meal planning (and regular meals) (and vegetables) became a distant memory. School is back in session tomorrow and I am determined to get us all back on track (she says while both kids furiously try to finish all of their spring break homework in one sitting, the night before school reopens). We’re doing the best we can.

Monday: Turkey Enchiladas

Tuesday: Grilled cheese sandwiches made with Grossy Pelosi’s Mom’s Italian Bread served with Black Lentil Soup

Wednesday: Leftovers

Thursday: Buttermilk pancakes, cheesy scrambled eggs, and oven bacon

Friday: Crispy Spicy Salmon Bowls
